Signify, the world leader in lighting, has unveiled its climate plan to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the consumer lighting products market. Aiming to contribute to the countries' goal of reducing carbon emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, Signify urged countries and business leaders to 'accelerate the transition to energy-efficient and connected LED lighting' as part of the 'Zero Carbon Emissions' movement.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26 ) in Glasgow brought environmental mobility in many sectors in today's conditions, where CO2 emissions worldwide have risen to unprecedented levels and energy prices have risen to the highest levels in history. Recognized for its sustainability efforts, Signify announced its commitment to taking industry leadership for climate action efforts and working with customers and partners across the value chain to create more flexible and sustainable healthcare within COP26.
Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, called for a rapid transition to energy-efficient and connected LED lighting[1] to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate digitization for both companies and consumers. In this context, country and business leaders need to prioritize changes that will affect both professional and consumer lighting products markets and give quick results.
CO2 emissions can be reduced by 553 million tons with the use of LED lighting
Signify, which has called for the transition to energy-efficient, connected LEDs as the new standard in 'general lighting'[2] after its announcement years ago to end the use of classic bulbs worldwide, will contribute to the goals of worldwide economic recovery plans such as the European Green Agreement and the American Employment Plan, as well as support countries to meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement. The call also reflects the International Energy Agency's (IEA) view in the same direction. In its recently released 'Net Zero by 2050' report, the IEA recommended that "the ratio of LED bulbs to all bulb sales should rise to 100% in all regions by 2025" and that minimum energy efficiency standards include smart controls for electrical appliances. According to Signify's findings, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 553 million tons with the use of LED lighting in the professional market, which is equivalent to CO2 gas, which 25 billion trees can clean from the atmosphere annually. At the same time, it is possible to save 1,132 terawatt hours of energy, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 494 million households. This means a €117 billion reduction in annual energy expenditures.[3]
Brian Motherway, Head of the IEA Energy Unit, said: "The process from today to 2030 will play a vital role in world leaders achieving the net zero carbon target by 2050. It is imperative that they support their commitments with actions that will yield results in the short and medium term. We anticipate that the transition to more energy-efficient technologies will be one of the key factors that will enable us to achieve the 'Race to Zero' goal."
