Signify, the world leader in lighting, has unveiled its climate plan to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the consumer lighting products market. Aiming to contribute to the countries' goal of reducing carbon emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030, Signify urged countries and business leaders to 'accelerate the transition to energy-efficient and connected LED lighting' as part of the 'Zero Carbon Emissions' movement.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26 ) in Glasgow brought environmental mobility in many sectors in today's conditions, where CO2 emissions worldwide have risen to unprecedented levels and energy prices have risen to the highest levels in history. Recognized for its sustainability efforts, Signify announced its commitment to taking industry leadership for climate action efforts and working with customers and partners across the value chain to create more flexible and sustainable healthcare within COP26.

Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, called for a rapid transition to energy-efficient and connected LED lighting[1] to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate digitization for both companies and consumers. In this context, country and business leaders need to prioritize changes that will affect both professional and consumer lighting products markets and give quick results.

CO2 emissions can be reduced by 553 million tons with the use of LED lighting

Signify, which has called for the transition to energy-efficient, connected LEDs as the new standard in 'general lighting'[2] after its announcement years ago to end the use of classic bulbs worldwide, will contribute to the goals of worldwide economic recovery plans such as the European Green Agreement and the American Employment Plan, as well as support countries to meet their commitments under the Paris Agreement. The call also reflects the International Energy Agency's (IEA) view in the same direction. In its recently released 'Net Zero by 2050' report, the IEA recommended that "the ratio of LED bulbs to all bulb sales should rise to 100% in all regions by 2025" and that minimum energy efficiency standards include smart controls for electrical appliances. According to Signify's findings, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 553 million tons with the use of LED lighting in the professional market, which is equivalent to CO2 gas, which 25 billion trees can clean from the atmosphere annually. At the same time, it is possible to save 1,132 terawatt hours of energy, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 494 million households. This means a €117 billion reduction in annual energy expenditures.[3]

Brian Motherway, Head of the IEA Energy Unit, said: "The process from today to 2030 will play a vital role in world leaders achieving the net zero carbon target by 2050. It is imperative that they support their commitments with actions that will yield results in the short and medium term. We anticipate that the transition to more energy-efficient technologies will be one of the key factors that will enable us to achieve the 'Race to Zero' goal."

"We need a very fast and powerful transformation"

Ebru Ertan Bilge, Director of Corporate Communications at Signify Middle East, Turkey, Pakistan and Africa, expressed his views: "As a company that has been operating in the world for 130 years and in Turkey for more than 90 years, we have adopted the mission of 'Improving the World and Improving People's Lives' within the scope of the 'Brighter Lives, A Better World' sustainability program. Within the framework of our sustainability program, we have set out our 2025 plans. Our goal is to double our positive impact on the environment and society by 2025. As with any major global issue, the climate crisis is a very urgent issue that the private sector, the public and civil society must cooperate on. Unfortunately, we have all witnessed the increasing effects of the climate crisis during this summer period. Not only in our country, but also in many parts of the world, disasters caused by climate change such as forest fires, floods and hurricanes occurred. In this period of global climate catastrophe, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), one of the world's most respected scientific institutions, has been appointed to the 6th Congress. He published the Evaluation Report. The report says a very rapid and powerful transformation is needed to achieve the paris agreement's goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, I would like to point out that the sustainability program we have launched is critical and timely. The climate crisis is an existential threat to our planet, and it is very important to be cooperative on this issue."

[1] 'Connected LED lighting' is defined as LED lighting that can be connected or connected to software controls.

[2] 'General lighting' refers to everyday lighting tools such as light bulbs and fixtures used in home and business environments (offices, commercial buildings, retail, stadiums, roads and streets, bridges, parks and tunnels). It is accepted that the sale and use of some traditional lighting products other than LED will continue for special purpose uses without LED alternatives.
