Ataturk Cultural Center, which started construction in 1946 and opened as the fourth largest art center in the world in 1969, is one of the landmarks of the Republican period. It remained closed until 1978 following the fire in 1970. It hosted cultural and artistic activities for 30 years after renovation. It remained closed from 2008 to 2018 and was demolished for construction of a new one. The architect of the new building is Murat Tabanoglu, son of Hayati Tabanoglu, who designed the building built in 1969. In addition to theaters, cinemas and concert halls, the building consists of five sections with an area of 95,000 m2, including an exhibition center, congress hall, library, museum, art gallery, café and restaurants.
