Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) will build a visit center where archaeological remains will be displayed with Theodosius Port, which appeared during the metro excavations in Yenikapi. IBB is organizing a national competition for the architectural design of the center. The announcement of the 'Theodosius Port Archaeological Site Project Competition' was published in the Official Gazette today. According to the advertisement, the subject of the competition was determined as 'designing the visitor center in the context of the Archaeological Site of Theodosius Port'.

80 THOUSAND TL AWARD TO THE FIRST OF THE COMPETITION

The first prize in the free, national, architecture competition will be TL 80,000, the second prize will be TL 60,000, and the third prize will be TL 40,000. In addition, 30,000 TL honorable mentions will be awarded to 5 projects.

PROJECT DELIVERY DATE 26 OCTOBER 2020

According to the competition announcement published in the Official Gazette on 20 July 2020, the deadline for asking questions was 13 August 2020. Projects can be delivered by October 26, 2020. The postal pick-up date can be made until October 30, 2020. The jury will begin evaluating the projects on November 7, 2020. The colloquium and award ceremony are scheduled for November 21, 2020.

ADVISORY MEMBERS

Advisory judges of the competition; IBB President Ekrem Imamoglu, IBB Deputy Secretary General Mehmet Pebbleoglu, IBB Cultural Assets Department Head Mahir Polat, Istanbul University Yenikapi Wrecks President Prof. Dr. Ufuk Kocabas was designated as Omer Yilmaz, Coordinator of IPA (Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance) Competitions.

The principal jury members, chaired by architect Nevzat Oguz Özer, are architect Zeynep Eres Özdogan, architect Cem Sorguç, landscape planner Ata Turak and civil engineer Tunç Tibet Akbas.

ISTANBUL HISTORY IN YENIKAPI

During the archaeological excavations that started in 2004 in Yenikapi, Istanbul, cultural filling was detected at a depth of about 13 meters. Unique information about the history of Istanbul was obtained, which was not known until that day. A church structure dating back to the 12th or 13th century was found under the Ottoman layer in the region.

Interesting examples are among the findings. Dice made of 1,500-year-old ivory, 8,500-year-old wheat head, the writing under the wooden sandals of the Byzantine period are noteworthy: "Use it in health, lady, wear it in beauty and happiness". Thirty-seven boats were found in the excavations.

In the kitchen section of a ship, ms. Cherry beans in a 9th century wicker basket, 127 Crimean-type stacked amphorae dated to the 5th century on another ship.The finds include candles, game stones, bowls, wooden anchors, iron anchors, palanga, shipping-related items, wooden and leather sandals and scallops. A total of 3,000 ivory scalcombs and more than 3,000 coins were also found. The footprints found in the excavations were found to be the footprints of the first Istanbulites, 8000 years old.
