More and more people are moving to cities, and with it, the increasing shortage of space and resources poses a huge challenge for municipalities. Smart city (connected smart buildings) is a solution to these problems. The use of digital technologies makes cities safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Light + Building 2020, the world's leading trade fair in Frankfurt, offers products for the smart city and creates a platform for intelligent building automation, intelligent energy management and connected security and security.

Technological developments and innovations play an important role in the concept of tomorrow's cities. The prerequisite for the smart city of the future is the safe, secure and efficient connection of people, places and infrastructure. Today, intensive connectivity and data collection from construction equipment is already a reality theme.

Smart Buildings – The Core of a Smart City

The urbanization process means that the amount of land available is reduced and the buildings become even larger, higher and more complex. Collecting and evaluating large amounts of data can help improve the safety and reliability, energy efficiency and environmental friendliness of buildings and cities. By combining a large number of sensors completely with the network, the collected data will be available for all services, thereby providing lower energy consumption, among others. According to the German Electrical Industry Association (ZVEI), smart building automation can save between 20 and 30 percent in terms of energy demand and CO2 emissions. In this context, self-learning systems encourage intensive user engagement, for example through needs-based control of light, air conditioning and heating, or by showing individual escape routes on mobile devices.

Smart Lighting – Makes an Important Contribution to Energy Saving

According to the Energy Balance Working Group, 13 percent of electricity consumption in Germany is based on lighting. With energy savings of up to 80 percent, LED fixtures offer great potential compared to traditional lighting systems. In addition, light temperatures and colors can be adjusted to suit personal requirements. In this way, smart LED fixtures can be used to increase well-being and productivity. In smart cities, LED street lights equipped with WLAN, charging possibilities for electric cars, emergency search button and other sensors are an important part of the Internet of Things (IoT).

Electric Charging Infrastructure – Key To Intelligent Mobility

Smart cities can only be made possible by new mobility concepts, and the intensive expansion of electromobility is one of the keys. As a result, it will be required to provide charging points for electric vehicles and a smart charging management system on a smart electrical network (smart grid). In this context, special attention should be paid to the integration and adaptation of charging points into the electrical infrastructure of a building.

Light + Building: Market Overview and Discussion Platform

Tomorrow's challenges such as urbanization and climate change can only be met with innovative ideas and approaches. If we are to go beyond individual measures and pilot projects, an intensive flow of information is required among everyone involved. Light + Building, the world's leading trade fair in Frankfurt am Main from 8 to 13 March 2020, is an ideal platform for discussing concepts related to building automation, smart city, smart neighborhood, energy management, progressive e-charging infrastructure and connected security.
