Lighting to energize or relax: new LED packs help increase alertness and adjust melatonin levels, ensuring sleep quality.

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today unveiled the first "human-centered" LED packages collectively known as the LM302N. Designed with carefully constructed light spectrums, the LM302N family helps the human body adjust melatonin levels indoors, making people feel more energetic or comfortable depending on their daily life pattern.

"The benefits of using Samsung's LM302N go beyond visual recognition's core lighting function by improving the non-visual biological effects of lighting on humans," said Un so Kim, Senior Vice President, LED Product Group at Samsung Electronics. "Our LED solutions start with a whole new human-oriented approach to using artificial lighting to leverage today's indoor lifestyles to increase productivity and relaxation."

Melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycle, responds to the color wavelength light range seen. Brighter blue concentrated lighting suppresses the body's melatonin production, increases concentration and provides a greater sense of general alertness. Similarly, low color light intensity helps to improve sleep quality by minimizing disturbances at the natural onset of the body's melatonin production.

Samsung's LM302N uses precisely designed light spectrums with color that appears optimized to meet lighting requirements to the desired extent at any time: LM302N DAY increases alertness and the LM302N NITE increases relaxation. Standardized at 3.0 × 3.0mm, these products can fit into a wide range of lighting fixtures and are protected against moisture and heat.

LM302N DAY can suppress the body's melatonin levels by more than 18 percent of traditional LED lighting. Available at a variety of color temperatures from 3000K to 6500K, the DAY package can be used in a variety of indoor applications such as schools, offices, libraries and industrial sites to increase an individual's alertness and energy level.

The LM302N NITE helps people maintain hormone levels at night in a calm natural atmosphere by offering an appropriate level of brightness without preventing the release of melatenin. The body increases relaxation by releasing about five percent more melatonin under lights with LM302N NITE packages than traditional LED packages. In turn, spending too much time under traditional night lighting can cause excessive alertness, which makes it difficult to sleep. In addition, the LM302N NITE is offered at color temperatures between 1800K and 4000K, providing design flexibility to provide the benefits of relaxing light to various light areas.

Day and NITE packages can be combined into a single fixture to help people maintain their natural circadian rhythms 24 hours a day. This dual lighting option is the most suitable option for those who spend most of their time indoors and struggle with mixed body clocks.

* CRI (Color creation index): a standard method for measuring the quality of light by measuring what the colors of surfaces look like when illuminated by a specific light source. The higher the CRI number, the more accurately a light source creates the color of an object.

** CCT (Associated color temperature): A general indicator of the "temperature" or "coolness" of light. Light sources with CCT below 3200K are generally considered hot (redr), while those with CCT above 4000K are generally considered cooler (bluer).

M/P Ratio (Melanopic / photopic ratio): a measure of how efficiently a light source triggers melatonin suppression MDER (Melanopic daylight efficiency ratio): a measure of how much bright standard light (Illuminating D65 defined by the International Lighting Commission) should be for the suppression level of melatonin comparable to the light source tested
