- 81% of holidaymakers worry about the safety of their homes when they go on holiday
- More than half of respondents (51 per cent) fear a break-in at their home
- Almost half (45 per cent) of respondents said they would be less concerned if they could access the lighting system in their home from their mobile phones
Philips Lighting (Euronext Amsterdam: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, conducted a study that revealed the most important issues that holidaymakers worry about when away from home. According to the results of the study conducted in America and Europe, only 36 percent of holidaymakers prepare for measures related to the safety of their homes the day before or a few hours before going on holiday. 81 percent of respondents are afraid that they have left their homes empty. Smart home technologies such as Philips Hue can be an effective way to reduce stress levels on holiday, research suggests. Forty-five percent of respondents said that if they could remotely control the lights in their home with their mobile phones, they would have less security concerns when away from home.
According to the study of more than 8,000 adult participants from six countries, including the US, Germany, Uk, France, the Netherlands and Sweden, safety concerns about being away from home range from robbing the house (51 per cent), forgetting to take out the rubbish (15 per cent) to leaving food in the fridge (18 per cent).
Young people are more afraid
to leave their homes empty The research also suggests that the perception that anxiety increases with age is also unwarranted. In particular, 31 percent of younger respondents said they were concerned that they were on vacation and their home was empty because of their Facebook or Instagram posts. Younger respondents were 30 per cent more concerned about seeing their homes empty than other age groups. Ninety per cent of respondents aged 18-24 and just 73 per cent of respondents over the age of 55 said they were concerned about the safety of their homes while on holiday.
According to the study, young participants between the 18th and 24th are the most prone to using technological solutions to the anxiety they experience while on holiday. Sixty-five percent of teens say they will feel safer with an app that can remotely control security systems, including devices such as lighting and sound systems. However, the research reveals that there is not enough time left to use these technologies because there is not enough preparation for safety before leaving home.

One of hue's most used and valuable features is the remote control function. Based on feedback from our customers, the latest Hue app update allows holidaymakers to create the perception that they are at home even when they are away from home. With this update, the lights can be programmed to turn on and off on demand. Users can manage the lighting in their homes from anywhere in the world. In other words, security measures do not need to be considered among the preparation lists that go on and on before the holiday."

- Burglary while on holiday (51 per cent)
- Don't forget power tools on (32 per cent)
- Drying of plants in the house or garden (30 percent)
- Pet alone at home while on holiday (25 per cent)
- If the house is not well lit, passers-by understand that the house is empty (25 percent)
- Forget the lights on (17 per cent)
